The first week of September was pretty warm and, we were starting to become concerned about dehydration in the grapes. Since then we have had a real cool down in temperatures overall, lots of humidity back in the air and the threat of dehydration is gone. I’m seeing phenological ripening, not ripening do to dehydration.
We just started to pick our first 2007 red varietals on Saturday, September 15th for our winery clients. The comments back from the winemakers on the first three deliveries are making us really excited about the exceptional quality that the Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Barbera and Zinfandel are showing right out of the crusher.
Many reds aren’t ready to be picked yet, although it is starting to feel like fall is on the way: acorns are falling, and the deer are chasing each other. But, no bears in the vineyards yet, which means the Mourvedre and Zinfandel must not be ripe. – Clay Shannon
