Winemaking Notes

The grapes used to produce our 2009 Shannon Ridge Home Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon were picked at the peak of ripeness. We did a long maceration to soften tannins and improve flavors and mouth feel. We used gentle processing to keep tannin levels down. The wine was aged in French oak for twenty months.

The grapes used to produce our 2009 Shannon Ridge Single Vineyard Barbera were picked from our High Valley Vineyards in Lake County. They were allowed to hang on the vines      long enough for the acid to come into balance. We did a long cold soak on the skins to improve color and enhance the fresh fruit. The fruit was pressed at dryness and put through  Malo-lactic fermentation. Aged in French and American oak to enhance the creamy vanilla mouth feel.

After fermentation, the wine is aged 4 – 6 months in stainless steel. This wine has a pleasing complexity of aromas with smoky mineral notes and hints of jasmine, orange blossom and fennel. The mouth feel is nicely balanced with refreshingly clean flavors similar to the aromas and added nuances of citrus, lilac and apricot.

2007 Sauvignon Blanc

Winemaking Notes

The 2007 Shannon Ridge Sauvignon Blanc reminds me of a snowy winter day in January up at the Shannon Ridge ranch. Since this is the first fruit we pick and it does not get aged in oak, it is also the first wine we bottle from the vintage. In January we generally find ourselves hunkered down in the Shannon Ridge vineyard office making the final adjustments to perfect the Sauvignon Blanc. As we sat diligently working on the blend the first snow storm of the year casually slipped in from the Northern Pacific Ocean bringing a dark gray spectrum of heavy clouds and a burst of cold air. Over the course of the afternoon we watched out the window as the dollar-bill-sized snowflakes fell from the sky. Of course sitting inside was not an option at this point, we were drawn outside by the amazing spectacle. As we stood and watched individual flakes fall from the sky we marveled in the pure splendor of the skies, and felt the sting of the lively snowflakes as they embraced our skin. You may be asking why does the Shannon Ridge 2007 Sauvignon Blanc “remind you of a snowy day in January?" Like the snow in the high county, the Shannon Ridge 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is pure and elegant. The near colorless appearance, electrifying aromatics, and crisp cooling acid, parallel the snow on that cold January day. We present this 2007 Sauvignon Blanc as a preview to a wonderful 2007 vintage of wines from Shannon Ridge. Enjoy the cool crisp Sauvignon Blanc on a hot summer day as a reprieve from the heat for the mind, body and soul as I recall a snowy winter day in January up at the Shannon Ridge ranch. Cheers!

2007 Roussanne

Winemaking Notes

This wine exhibits notes of rich, ripe pear with hints of citrus blossom and spice. Letting the wine sit and aerate brings out more complex aromas of lychee nut and star anise. The mouth feel is also very rich with a core of juicy bosc pear. There's enough fresh acidity to balance off against most fish or poultry dishes, especially ones that are more on the spicy end of the spectrum. The freshness of the fruit is best enjoyed while the wine is still young, but given its weight, the wine will age for another 2 to 4 years. In making this Roussanne, it was barrel aged in French oak barrels to give it a creamy well-balanced mouth feel and blended with Viognier to intensify the pear and tropical aromas.

To enhance richness, depth and mouth feel and to elevate the ripe fruit characters, we blended in 4% stainless steel fermented fruit.

The grapes used to produce our 2007 Shannon Ridge Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested from our Family’s vineyards in the High Valley appellation in Lake County, California. The grapes were picked at the peak of ripeness at 26 Brix. The grapes were put through an early press with a slow extraction of color and tannins from the skins as well as 100% malolactic fermentation in French oak.

We bleed off some juice to increase the skin-to-juice ratio to help intensify flavors and aroma. We blended in a small percentage of Tempranillo to brighten color and to lengthen the finish.
